Donald Trump Threatens to Crush Canada's Economy with Tariffs—And Danielle Smith Agrees?

Nothing to see here, just the Premier of one of Canada's most populous and economically significant provinces bowing down to Donald Trump already.

On Monday, Trump made headlines after he threatened to slap a 25% tax on Canadian goods when he returns to the White House. In his usual style, Trump framed the tariffs as punishment to Canada (as well as China and Mexico) for illegal immigration and the American fentanyl epidemic.

His reasoning is obviously another one of Trump's populist bullying strategies and another way to spark even more hateful anti-immigrant rhetoric in Canada. But let's make one thing clear, these tariffs would absolutely cripple the Canadian economy. I am no economist, but a 25% markup on everything we sell to our biggest trade partner smells like a recession.

In a now-deleted tweet posted on X Tuesday, Danielle Smith appeared to show support for Trump's tariff threat.

If you don't know anything about Danielle Smith, all you need to know is that she spent the first 17 years of her career as the leader of the Wild Rose Party, Alberta's Libertarian opposition to the Conservative Party. In 2017, the Wildrose Party had gained enough support that they merged with the Conservative Party, and by 2022 she had risen all the way to Alberta's most prominent position as Premier.

Not even the typical Conservative Trump cronies, Poilievre and Ford, demonstrated any positive reaction to Trump's threats. Ford said it was like "a family member stabbing him in the back" (lol), and Poilievre, in between his slogans and finger-pointing at Trudeau, said retaliatory tariffs aren't off the table. What he thinks privately and will actually do if elected Prime Minister is one thing, but at least he isn't saying it out loud.

Danielle Smith, on the other hand, demonstrated her appreciation for Trump's concerns. Rather than denouncing the NAFTA-violating threats, she instead made a loose attempt at pandering to the President-Elect.

Trump pointed a torpedo at the Canadian economy, and Danielle Smith thanked him for it.

The Albertan Premier seeks to fan the flames and grow Trump's divisive and racist anti-immigrant sentiment among Canadians. She, like the President-Elect, plans on framing Canadian immigrants as scapegoats while the economy burns. But that's a story for a different day.

Albertan Premier has already promised to destroy the earth, I guess we shouldn't be surprised she wants to destroy the Canadian economy too.
