Time for the Liberals and NDP to Unite — Sign the Petition

For years, the Liberal Party and the New Democratic Party (NDP) have shared common progressive goals: fighting for affordable healthcare, combating climate change, advancing workers' rights, and building a more inclusive and equitable society. However, the constant division between the two parties has allowed the Conservative Party to repeatedly win elections, often pushing policies that run counter to the values of the majority of Canadians.

This petition calls for a bold and historic step: the merger of the Liberal and NDP parties into a single, progressive political force that can unite to address the biggest challenges of our time. By joining together, these two parties could form a government that reflects the diverse, inclusive, and forward-thinking nation that Canada is meant to be.

The Polls Signal It's Time

According to the current CBC polls, the Conservative Party of Canada holds a nearly 20-point lead in the upcoming 2025 Federal election. To an outside observer, this suggests that the Canadian populace has become more Conservative. This assumption could not be farther from the truth, however.

Canada is, by and large, a progressive country. Despite the rhetoric of political parties on both sides of the spectrum, the majority of Canadians align with left-leaning values on key issues like healthcare, climate action, social justice, and workers’ rights. Yet, as the country heads toward a crucial federal election, the fractured landscape of left-wing politics has allowed the Conservative Party to gain a worrying edge—a situation that risks undermining the very policies most Canadians hold dear.

While the Conservatives sit atop the polls at 41%,  the Liberal Party trails by 18 points at 23%, and the NDP is not far behind sitting at nearly 19%. Not to mention, the Green Party, another party that runs on leftist values, sits at 4%.  Not to mention, a 2021 survey by the Angus Reid Institute found that 60% of Canadians support climate action policies that align with the progressive platforms of the Liberal Party, NDP, and Green Party. Likewise, Canadians overwhelmingly support policies like universal healthcare, progressive taxation, and the protection of civil liberties. This data suggests that the majority of the country holds progressive values, yet political fracturing among these leftist parties has paved the way for the Conservatives to win the election handily.

The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, has managed to rally right-wing voters, many of whom are driven by concerns over inflation, public safety, and opposition to government policies they view as too progressive. Poilievre’s populist rhetoric and staunch opposition to policies like the carbon tax and "woke" culture have resonated with a significant portion of the Canadian electorate, particularly in rural and suburban areas. Poilievre has also tapped into the dissatisfaction of many Canadians who feel disconnected from the political establishment—particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing economic challenges.

The Conservatives’ ability to unite their base, while the Liberals, NDP, and Greens fracture their collective support, has given them an opening to secure a major electoral victory. This is especially evident in key swing ridings, where the left-wing vote is split across multiple parties, allowing the Conservatives to win with a minority of the vote.

The Stakes for Canada

This is a critical moment for Canada. If the left-wing parties do not find a way to come together, they risk ceding power to a party whose policies are far more in line with corporate interests, austerity measures, and the rollback of environmental protections. Poilievre’s Conservatives are already positioning themselves to dismantle climate policies, reduce social welfare programs, and scale back federal investments in healthcare.

In the wake of Donald Trump’s victory in the United States, Canada cannot afford to repeat the mistakes of fractured political opposition. Trump’s rise to power demonstrated the devastating consequences of a divided progressive base, where liberal voters failed to unite and allowed a populist, right-wing candidate to capitalize on discontent and division. The same dynamics are at play in Canada, where the fractured left-wing vote—between the Liberals, NDP, and Green Party—could enable a Conservative victory despite their policies being out of touch with the majority of Canadians. As the world grapples with the far-reaching consequences of Trump’s policies, Canada must recognize the importance of solidarity on the left. Only by uniting progressive forces can we ensure that we don’t fall victim to a similar political shift in Canada, one that could undo decades of progress on issues like climate change, healthcare, and social justice. The stakes have never been higher: unity is not just important—it’s essential to protect Canada’s future.

The policies championed by the Liberals and NDP—on issues like affordable housing, climate action, workers' rights, and Indigenous reconciliation—are supported by the majority of Canadians. But without a united front, these policies will remain out of reach.

The Time for Change is Now

Canada is a majority left-leaning country, and it’s time our political landscape reflected that reality. The division between the Liberals, NDP, and Green Party has given the Conservatives an undue advantage, but it doesn’t have to stay this way. Progressives must come together, put aside differences, and forge a path toward a unified, forward-thinking government that will prioritize the needs of Canadians and protect our future.

The stakes are high, and the next election may determine whether Canada continues down a progressive path or falls under the influence of a right-wing government that does not represent the values of the majority. The choice is ours—unity or division.
